Diomede Islands
The Diomede Islands are two small islands located in the Bering Strait, between Russia and the United States. The larger island, known as Big Diomede, belongs to Russia, while the smaller island, Little Diomede, is part of the U.S. state of Alaska. The islands are approximately 2.4 miles apart and are significant for their geopolitical location, marking the boundary between the two countries.
The islands are named after the Greek hero Diomedes and are uninhabited except for a few seasonal visitors. They are also notable for the time difference between them; while Big Diomede operates on Russia Time, Little Diomede is on Alaska Time, creating a unique situation where the two islands are separated by a mere two hours despite their proximity.
