Different Trains
“Different Trains” is a composition by composer Steve Reich that blends music with recorded speech. Created in 1988, it features three string quartets and uses samples of train sounds and spoken words to evoke the experience of train travel during different times and places.
The piece contrasts the journeys of the composer as a child traveling across America with the harrowing experiences of Jewish people during the Holocaust. It highlights the stark differences in the meanings of trains, representing both the innocence of childhood and the tragedy of displacement and persecution during World War II.
