Desecheo National Wildlife Refuge
Desecheo National Wildlife Refuge is located off the western coast of Puerto Rico. Established in 1976, it encompasses the entire island of Desecheo, which is about 1,500 acres in size. The refuge is primarily aimed at protecting the diverse wildlife and habitats found on the island, including various species of birds, reptiles, and marine life.
The refuge is an important site for bird conservation, particularly for migratory species. It also serves as a research area for scientists studying marine ecosystems and coral reefs. Access to the island is limited, helping to preserve its natural environment and minimize human impact.
