Dermatophagoides
Dermatophagoides is a genus of microscopic mites commonly found in household dust. They thrive in warm, humid environments and primarily feed on dead skin cells shed by humans and pets. These mites are not visible to the naked eye, but their presence can lead to allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
The two most common species are Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae. These mites are significant contributors to indoor allergens, which can trigger conditions like asthma and allergic rhinitis. Regular cleaning and reducing humidity can help minimize their populations in homes.
