Dermatophagia
Dermatophagia is a psychological condition characterized by the compulsive habit of biting or chewing one's own skin, often focusing on the fingers or the surrounding areas. This behavior can lead to noticeable damage to the skin, including wounds, scars, and infections. It is considered a type of body-focused repetitive behavior (BFRB), similar to conditions like trichotillomania (hair-pulling).
Individuals with dermatophagia may engage in this behavior as a way to cope with stress, anxiety, or boredom. Treatment options often include therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which helps individuals understand and manage their urges.
