Deobandi Movement
The Deobandi Movement is an Islamic revivalist movement that originated in the late 19th century in the town of Deoband, India. Founded in 1866, it aimed to promote a conservative interpretation of Islam and to counter British colonial influence. The movement emphasizes the importance of traditional Islamic education and the study of religious texts.
Deobandis advocate for a return to the teachings of the Quran and the Hadith, focusing on the principles of Sunni Islam. The movement has established numerous seminaries, known as madrasas, which train students in Islamic theology and jurisprudence. Today, it has a significant following in South Asia and beyond.
