The Delaware Colony was one of the original thirteen colonies established by European settlers in North America. Founded by the Swedes in 1638, it was initially called New Sweden. The colony was located along the Delaware River and was known for its fertile land and access to trade routes. In 1655, the Dutch took control of the colony, but it eventually became part of the English territories in 1664. Delaware was known for its diverse population, including English, Dutch, and Swedish settlers. It became the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1787.
