Dehumanization
Dehumanization is the process of depriving a person or group of positive human qualities, often making them seem less than human. This can occur through language, imagery, or actions that portray individuals as animals, objects, or threats. It is commonly seen in contexts of conflict, discrimination, and oppression, where the targeted group, such as refugees or minorities, is treated as inferior.
This phenomenon can lead to severe consequences, including violence and human rights violations. Historical examples include the treatment of Jews during the Holocaust and Rwandans during the Rwandan Genocide. Dehumanization undermines empathy and can facilitate atrocities by making it easier for individuals to justify harmful actions against others.
