Dampening (Damping)
Dampening, or damping, refers to the process of reducing the amplitude of oscillations or vibrations in a system. This can occur naturally, such as when a swinging pendulum gradually comes to a stop due to air resistance and friction, or it can be intentionally applied in engineering to enhance stability and performance.
In various applications, such as in mechanical systems, audio equipment, and building structures, damping materials or devices are used to absorb energy and minimize unwanted movements. Common damping methods include using rubber, foam, or specialized dampers that help control vibrations and improve safety and comfort.
