Damocles
The story of Damocles originates from ancient Greece and illustrates the concept of the precarious nature of power. Damocles was a courtier in the court of Dionysius II, a tyrant of Syracuse. He envied the king's wealth and power, prompting Dionysius to offer him a chance to experience this life firsthand.
However, during a lavish banquet, a sword was suspended above Damocles' head by a single strand of hair. This served as a stark reminder that great power comes with great danger and anxiety, highlighting the idea that those in positions of authority often face significant threats and responsibilities.
