Cytolysis
Cytolysis is the process in which a cell bursts due to the excessive accumulation of water inside it. This typically occurs when a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution, where the concentration of solutes outside the cell is lower than inside. As water moves into the cell to balance the solute concentrations, the internal pressure increases, eventually leading to the cell's rupture.
This phenomenon is particularly relevant in the study of cell biology and can have significant implications in various biological systems. For example, in microbiology, certain bacteria can undergo cytolysis when exposed to specific antibiotics that disrupt their cell membranes, leading to cell death.
