Cross River Gorilla
The Cross River Gorilla is a critically endangered subspecies of the western gorilla, found primarily in the mountainous regions along the border of Nigeria and Cameroon. It is the rarest of all gorilla subspecies, with an estimated population of only about 200 to 300 individuals remaining in the wild. These gorillas inhabit dense forests and are known for their shy and elusive nature.
Cross River Gorillas are slightly smaller than other gorilla subspecies, with males weighing between 300 to 400 pounds. They primarily feed on leaves, fruits, and stems, playing a vital role in their ecosystem by aiding in seed dispersal. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect their habitat and ensure their survival in the wild.
