Counties of Virginia
Virginia is divided into 95 counties, each serving as a local government unit. These counties vary in size, population, and geography, ranging from urban areas like Fairfax County to rural regions such as Bath County. Each county has its own elected officials and provides essential services to residents, including education, public safety, and infrastructure.
In addition to the counties, Virginia also has 38 independent cities, which function similarly to counties but are not part of any county. Notable independent cities include Richmond, the state capital, and Virginia Beach, known for its coastal attractions. Together, counties and independent cities make up the local governance structure of Virginia.
