Council of Hieria
The Council of Hieria was an important assembly of the Eastern Orthodox Church that took place in 754 CE. It was convened by Emperor Constantine V in the city of Hieria, near Constantinople. The council aimed to address the issue of iconoclasm, which involved the rejection and destruction of religious images, or icons, that were venerated by many Christians.
During the council, the participants, primarily bishops and theologians, condemned the use of icons and declared their veneration as heretical. The decisions made at the Council of Hieria were later rejected by the Second Council of Nicaea in 787 CE, which restored the veneration of icons in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
