Council of Fifty
The Council of Fifty was an organization established by the early leaders of the Latter-day Saint movement, particularly by Joseph Smith, in 1844. Its purpose was to create a governing body for the anticipated Kingdom of God on Earth and to prepare for the establishment of a theocratic society. The council aimed to address political, social, and religious issues facing the community.
After Smith's death, the council continued to function under the leadership of Brigham Young. It played a role in the governance of the Utah Territory and was involved in various political activities, including discussions about statehood and relations with the U.S. government. The council eventually became less active as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints shifted its focus.
