Council of Federated Organizations
The Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) was a coalition formed in the 1960s to promote civil rights in the southern United States. It brought together various civil rights groups, including the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), to coordinate efforts in voter registration and community organizing.
COFO played a significant role during the Freedom Summer of 1964, which aimed to increase voter registration among African Americans in Mississippi. The organization helped to highlight the struggles faced by Black citizens and worked to combat racial discrimination and disenfranchisement.
