Council of Elvira
The Council of Elvira was an important assembly of Christian bishops that took place around 306 AD in Elvira, a city in present-day Spain. This council is notable for its early efforts to establish church discipline and address various theological issues. It produced a series of canons, or church laws, that aimed to guide the behavior of Christians and clergy.
One of the key outcomes of the council was its stance on issues such as the treatment of lapsed Christians and the role of women in the church. The canons reflected the growing need for organization within the early Christian community, setting precedents for future councils, including the more famous Council of Nicaea.
