Council of Basel
The Council of Basel was an important assembly of the Roman Catholic Church that took place from 1431 to 1449. It aimed to address various issues, including church reform and the ongoing conflict with the Hussites, a group that emerged from the teachings of Jan Hus. The council sought to unify the church and resolve disputes over authority and governance.
Initially, the council was successful in discussing reforms and promoting dialogue. However, it faced challenges, including disagreements among its members and opposition from the papacy. Ultimately, the council's authority diminished, leading to its dissolution and the emergence of the Council of Florence as a more influential assembly.
