Coquille Indian Tribe
The Coquille Indian Tribe is a federally recognized Native American tribe located in southern Oregon. They are descendants of the original inhabitants of the region, primarily the Coquille River area. The tribe has a rich cultural heritage and is known for its traditional practices, including basket weaving and storytelling.
In 1989, the Coquille Indian Tribe regained federal recognition after a long struggle. This recognition has allowed them to manage their own affairs, including economic development initiatives such as the Mill Casino and other enterprises that support their community and preserve their cultural identity.
