Control Elements
Control elements are specific sequences of DNA that regulate the expression of genes. They can be found in various locations, such as upstream or downstream of a gene, and play a crucial role in determining when and how much a gene is expressed. These elements interact with proteins called transcription factors, which help initiate or suppress the transcription process.
There are two main types of control elements: promoters and enhancers. Promoters are located near the start of a gene and are essential for the binding of RNA polymerase, the enzyme responsible for transcription. Enhancers, on the other hand, can be located far from the gene they regulate and enhance the transcription process by providing additional binding sites for transcription factors.
