Condyloid Joint
A condyloid joint, also known as an ellipsoidal joint, is a type of synovial joint that allows movement in two planes: flexion and extension, as well as abduction and adduction. This joint structure consists of an oval-shaped end of one bone fitting into a similarly shaped cavity of another bone, enabling a range of motion while maintaining stability.
Common examples of condyloid joints include the wrist joint and the metacarpophalangeal joints of the fingers. These joints play a crucial role in hand and wrist movements, allowing for activities such as gripping and waving.
