Concordat of Worms
The Concordat of Worms was an agreement reached in 1122 between Pope Callixtus II and Holy Roman Emperor Henry V. It aimed to resolve the Investiture Controversy, a conflict over whether the pope or the emperor had the authority to appoint bishops and abbots. The concordat established a compromise, allowing the emperor to invest bishops with secular authority while the pope retained the right to appoint them spiritually.
This agreement marked a significant moment in the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Holy Roman Empire. It helped to clarify the roles of church and state, reducing tensions and paving the way for future cooperation between religious and political leaders in Europe.
