Compound Time
Compound time is a musical concept where each beat is divided into smaller, equal parts, typically in groups of three. This means that instead of feeling a steady pulse like in simple time, the rhythm has a lilting, flowing quality. For example, in a 6/8 time signature, each measure contains six eighth notes, which can be grouped into two sets of three, creating a dance-like feel.
In compound time, the emphasis usually falls on the first beat of each group, giving the music a strong, driving rhythm. This is often found in styles like jigs or waltzes, where the lively, bouncing quality makes it perfect for dancing.
