Common Water Snake
The Common Water Snake (*Nerodia sipedon*) is a non-venomous snake found in North America, primarily near freshwater habitats like lakes, rivers, and ponds. It has a robust body and can grow up to 55 inches long. Its coloration varies, often featuring patterns of brown, gray, or olive with darker bands, which help it blend into its environment.
These snakes are excellent swimmers and primarily feed on fish, amphibians, and small invertebrates. They are often mistaken for the venomous water moccasin due to their similar appearance. The Common Water Snake is generally not aggressive and will usually retreat when threatened.
