Common Nighthawk
The Common Nighthawk is a medium-sized bird found across North America, known for its distinctive long wings and pointed tail. It has a mottled brown and gray plumage that provides excellent camouflage against the ground. These birds are primarily active during dusk and dawn, feeding on insects while in flight.
Nighthawks are often heard rather than seen, producing a unique "peent" call during their aerial displays. They prefer open habitats such as fields and urban areas, where they can nest on the ground. Their migratory behavior takes them to South America for the winter months.
