Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf
The Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) is a body established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Its primary role is to review and make recommendations on the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles from a coastal state's baseline. This helps ensure that coastal states can claim their rights over seabed resources.
The CLCS consists of experts in geology, geophysics, and hydrography. When a coastal state submits data to the CLCS, the commission evaluates the scientific and technical information to determine the appropriate limits. This process supports international cooperation and helps prevent disputes over maritime boundaries.
