The Codex Gigas, also known as the Devil's Bible, is a medieval manuscript created in the early 13th century. It is famous for its large size, measuring about 36 inches tall and 20 inches wide, making it one of the largest surviving medieval manuscripts. The book contains the complete Latin Bible, along with various historical texts, medical information, and illustrations, including a striking full-page depiction of the devil.
This manuscript was produced in a Benedictine monastery in what is now the Czech Republic. Legend has it that a monk created the Codex Gigas in a single night with the help of the devil, which contributes to its nickname. Today, it is housed in the National Library of Sweden in Stockholm.
