Clostridioides difficile
Clostridioides difficile, often referred to as C. difficile, is a type of bacteria that can cause inflammation of the colon, known as colitis. It typically occurs after the use of antibiotics, which can disrupt the normal gut bacteria, allowing C. difficile to thrive. Symptoms may include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever.
Transmission of C. difficile usually happens through contaminated surfaces or fecal matter. It is more common in healthcare settings, such as hospitals and nursing homes, where people may have weakened immune systems. Treatment often involves specific antibiotics and, in severe cases, may require additional medical interventions.
