Cicada Sounds
Cicada sounds are produced by male cicadas as a way to attract females during mating season. These insects create their distinctive calls by rapidly contracting and relaxing special membranes called tymbals located on their abdomen. The sound can vary significantly between species, with some producing a loud, buzzing noise while others may have a more melodic tone.
The volume of cicada sounds can reach up to 120 decibels, making them one of the loudest insects in the world. Their calls are often heard during warm summer months, contributing to the characteristic soundscape of many forests and gardens.
