Cicada Killer
The Cicada Killer is a large wasp known for its unique behavior of hunting cicadas. These wasps can grow up to 2 inches long and are typically black and yellow. They dig burrows in the ground where they store their prey, paralyzing cicadas with their sting before bringing them back to feed their larvae.
Despite their intimidating size, Cicada Killers are generally not aggressive towards humans. They are solitary insects, meaning they do not live in colonies like many other wasps. Their primary role in the ecosystem is to help control cicada populations, making them beneficial to gardens and landscapes.
