Church Committee
The Church Committee was a U.S. Senate committee established in 1975 to investigate abuses by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and other intelligence agencies. Named after its chairman, Senator Frank Church, the committee aimed to address concerns about illegal activities, including surveillance and assassination plots, that had come to light during the Watergate scandal.
The committee's findings led to significant reforms in U.S. intelligence operations, including the establishment of oversight mechanisms to ensure accountability. Its work highlighted the need for transparency and respect for civil liberties in the activities of intelligence agencies.
