Chromatophore
A chromatophore is a specialized cell found in certain animals, such as cephalopods (like octopuses and squids) and some reptiles. These cells contain pigments that can change color, allowing the animal to blend into its environment or communicate with others. The ability to change color is controlled by the contraction and relaxation of muscle fibers surrounding the chromatophores.
In addition to cephalopods and reptiles, chromatophores are also present in some species of fish and amphibians. The process of color change can be rapid and is often used for camouflage, signaling, or temperature regulation. This fascinating adaptation helps these animals survive in their habitats.
