Cholestasis
Cholestasis is a medical condition characterized by a reduction or stoppage of bile flow from the liver to the duodenum. Bile is essential for digestion, particularly in breaking down fats. When bile flow is impaired, it can lead to a buildup of bile acids in the liver and bloodstream, causing various symptoms.
Common symptoms of cholestasis include jaundice, which is a yellowing of the skin and eyes, itching, and dark urine. Cholestasis can be caused by several factors, including liver diseases, certain medications, or blockages in the bile ducts. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve medication or surgery.
