Chilean woodpecker
The Chilean woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus) is a large bird native to the forests of southern Chile and Argentina. It is easily recognized by its striking black and white plumage, along with a vibrant red crown on the male. This woodpecker primarily feeds on insects, larvae, and tree sap, using its strong beak to drill into trees.
These birds are known for their loud drumming sounds, which they use to communicate and establish territory. The Chilean woodpecker typically inhabits temperate rainforests and is an important part of the ecosystem, helping to control insect populations and promote tree health.
