Chiari malformation
Chiari malformation is a condition where brain tissue extends into the spinal canal. This occurs when the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance, is pushed down through the opening at the base of the skull. It can lead to various symptoms, including headaches, neck pain, and balance issues.
There are different types of Chiari malformation, with Type I being the most common. It often develops during adolescence or early adulthood and may be associated with other conditions, such as syringomyelia, a disorder where a cyst forms within the spinal cord. Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests like an MRI.
