Cherax destructor
Cherax destructor, commonly known as the yabbie, is a freshwater crayfish native to Australia. It inhabits rivers, lakes, and ponds, often burrowing into the mud to create shelters. Yabbies are known for their blue-green coloration and can grow up to 15 centimeters in length.
These crustaceans are an important part of their ecosystem, serving as both predator and prey. They feed on detritus, aquatic plants, and small invertebrates, contributing to the nutrient cycle in their habitats. Cherax destructor is also popular in aquaculture and recreational fishing due to its culinary value.
