Chelonia mydas
Chelonia mydas, commonly known as the green sea turtle, is a large marine reptile found in tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide. It is named for the green color of its body fat, which is a result of its herbivorous diet, primarily consisting of seagrasses and algae. Green sea turtles can weigh up to 700 pounds and have a shell length of about 3 to 4 feet.
These turtles are known for their long migrations between feeding grounds and nesting sites. Female green sea turtles return to the beaches where they were born to lay eggs, typically nesting every two to four years. They are classified as endangered due to threats such as habitat loss, poaching, and climate change.
