Chanute Air Force Base
Chanute Air Force Base was a United States Air Force installation located in Rantoul, Illinois. Established in 1917, it served various roles, including as a training base for pilots and maintenance personnel. The base was named after Octave Chanute, an aviation pioneer known for his contributions to early flight.
The base was officially closed in 1993 as part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. Today, the site has been repurposed for civilian use, housing businesses and educational institutions, while preserving some historical aspects of its military heritage.
