Chang and Eng Bunker were conjoined twins born in 1811 in Siam, now known as Thailand. They were connected at the chest by a band of cartilage and shared a liver. The twins became famous as "Siamese twins" and traveled extensively in the United States and Europe, performing in exhibitions and earning a significant income.
In 1843, Chang and Eng married sisters Sarah and Adelaide Yates and fathered a total of 21 children. They settled in North Carolina, where they ran a farm. The twins lived until 1874, with Chang passing away first, followed by Eng just hours later.
