Chagos Archipelago
The Chagos Archipelago is a group of over 60 small islands located in the central Indian Ocean. It is part of the British Indian Ocean Territory and is known for its rich biodiversity and pristine coral reefs. The largest island, Diego Garcia, hosts a significant military base used by the United States.
The archipelago is home to unique wildlife, including various bird species and marine life. In the 1960s and 1970s, the indigenous population was forcibly removed to make way for military installations, leading to ongoing legal and humanitarian discussions regarding their rights and the future of the islands.
