Ceratocystis lukuohia
Ceratocystis lukuohia is a fungal pathogen primarily affecting Hawaiian native trees, particularly ōhiʻa (Metrosideros polymorpha). It causes a disease known as Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death, which leads to the rapid wilting and death of infected trees. The fungus spreads through spores and can be transmitted by human activities, such as the movement of contaminated soil or plant material.
This pathogen was first identified in 2014 and has since raised significant concerns for Hawaiian ecosystems. Efforts to manage and control the spread of Ceratocystis lukuohia include public awareness campaigns and research into resistant tree varieties.
