Central venous catheters
A central venous catheter (CVC) is a thin, flexible tube inserted into a large vein, usually in the neck, chest, or groin. It allows for the administration of medications, fluids, and nutrients directly into the bloodstream. CVCs are often used for patients who require long-term intravenous therapy or have difficult venous access.
CVCs can also be used for monitoring central venous pressure, which helps assess heart function and fluid status. They are typically placed by trained healthcare professionals in a sterile environment to minimize the risk of infection. Proper care and maintenance are essential to ensure their effectiveness and safety.
