Carpometacarpal
The term "carpometacarpal" refers to the joints located between the carpal bones of the wrist and the metacarpal bones of the hand. These joints play a crucial role in hand movement and function, allowing for a range of motions such as flexion, extension, and opposition. The most notable carpometacarpal joint is the one associated with the thumb, known as the first carpometacarpal joint, which enables the thumb's unique ability to grasp and pinch.
In addition to the thumb, there are four other carpometacarpal joints that connect the remaining fingers to the wrist. These joints are less mobile than the first carpometacarpal joint but still contribute to the overall dexterity of the hand. Proper functioning of the carpometacarpal joints is essential for daily activities, such as writing, typing, and gripping objects.
