Cardolan was one of the kingdoms of the Dúnedain, the race of Men descended from the ancient Númenóreans. The kingdom of Cardolan was established after the downfall of Arnor, a major kingdom of the Dúnedain. It eventually fell into decline due to internal strife and external threats, particularly from the Witch-king of Angmar. By the time of The Lord of the Rings, Cardolan had become largely desolate, with its remnants lost to time and memory.
