Cardiomyocyte
A cardiomyocyte is a specialized type of muscle cell found in the heart. These cells are responsible for the contraction and relaxation of the heart, enabling it to pump blood throughout the body. Cardiomyocytes are unique because they can generate electrical impulses, which coordinate the heartbeat and ensure that the heart functions effectively.
These cells are characterized by their striated appearance and are interconnected through structures called intercalated discs. This connectivity allows for synchronized contractions, which are essential for maintaining proper blood circulation. Damage to cardiomyocytes, such as from a heart attack, can lead to serious health issues, including heart failure.
