Cardiac Tissue
Cardiac tissue, also known as cardiac muscle, is a specialized type of muscle found only in the heart. It is responsible for the heart's ability to contract and pump blood throughout the body. Cardiac tissue is unique because it is involuntary, meaning it operates without conscious control, and it has a striated appearance due to its organized structure.
The cells in cardiac tissue, called cardiomyocytes, are interconnected by structures known as intercalated discs. These discs allow for rapid communication and coordination between cells, ensuring that the heart beats in a synchronized manner. This efficient contraction is essential for maintaining proper blood circulation and overall cardiovascular health.
