Cardiac Myocytes
Cardiac myocytes are specialized muscle cells found in the heart. They are responsible for the contraction of the heart, allowing it to pump blood throughout the body. These cells are unique because they can generate electrical impulses, which help coordinate the heartbeat.
Cardiac myocytes are interconnected through structures called intercalated discs, which allow for rapid communication between cells. This connectivity ensures that the heart beats in a synchronized manner. Unlike other muscle cells, cardiac myocytes have a high resistance to fatigue, enabling them to work continuously throughout a person's life.
