Canadian Heritage Rivers System
The Canadian Heritage Rivers System (CHRS) is a national program that recognizes and protects rivers of outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational value in Canada. Established in 1984, the system aims to promote the conservation of these rivers while encouraging public awareness and appreciation of their significance.
Rivers designated under the CHRS are managed collaboratively by various stakeholders, including federal, provincial, and territorial governments, as well as local communities. This partnership helps ensure that the ecological integrity and cultural heritage of these waterways are preserved for future generations, while also providing opportunities for outdoor activities and tourism.
