Cambodian History
Cambodian history dates back to the Khmer Empire, which flourished from the 9th to the 15th centuries. This period is known for its impressive architecture, including the famous temple complex of Angkor Wat, and for its advancements in art and culture. The empire was a major power in Southeast Asia, influencing neighboring regions through trade and religion.
In the 20th century, Cambodia faced significant turmoil, particularly during the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979, led by Pol Pot. This period resulted in the deaths of millions and widespread suffering. After the fall of the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia began a long process of recovery and rebuilding, transitioning towards a more stable government and economy.
