California least tern
The California least tern is a small seabird known for its slender body and pointed wings. It typically measures about 8 to 9 inches in length and has a distinctive black cap on its head, white underparts, and grayish wings. This bird primarily feeds on small fish and invertebrates, which it catches by diving into the water.
California least terns are found along the California coast, particularly in sandy beach areas and estuaries. They are known to nest in colonies on the ground, often using pebbles or shells as nesting materials. Due to habitat loss and other threats, this species is considered endangered.
